Seeing that the area spinward of the Marches were rather poorly
developed, such a major influx of warships, traders, technology etc.
would have a major reshaping of the area. Interesting possibilities
present themselves - afer those "pockets of resistance" are tamed.

Marc Miller apparently want's to create a brand new ruleset for
Traveller. Please, please convince him not to: Traveller already has
three set's of game rules, and yet another rule set (Traveller's
fourth) would only exhaust the patience and good will of Traveller fans
and the general public.

Thank you.

MArc Miller's email address is at FarFuture@aol.com

A) Should we consider federating the traveller list into One Happy Family
again?

B) Please, please DON'T publish the Traveller rules on the net! This may
drastically weaken Marc Miller's copywrite, and endanger the
return/rebirth of Traveller!

..and what was I doing when GDW blew up? Solid, productive work like
building Massive Imperial Warships!

I had difficulty trying to translate the data given in Battle Rider's
ships into Brilliant Lancer's terms. The ship's in BR were designed to
mesh and balance each other, and only roughly fit into BL restrictions.
Major problems were hit with...
... the massive armour levels of some ship's. Problems centred
around the mass of the armour, the size of the power drive and the
volume of G-fuel needed - while still trying to fit in those
serious meson gun's into the hull. (Why, why didn't the Imperial Navy
use particle accellerators instead? Mass, energy and especially crew
requirements would have made my job rather easier)
... the meson screens. The size of those meson screen machinery
get's really, REALLY out of control, devouring space like Microsoft
      Software!

I don't believe that in ANY instance I was able to exactly match the
stat's given in BR! If anyone here has a lot of time on their hand,
(over the holidays, it took me about a day to translate one ship, with
eight capital ships in total - by pencil and calculator, of course!) they
may wish to try and get closer to the BR stat's fot the ship's.

I'm just glad that the bloody things fly.

In all instances, I totally ignored the rules regarding surface area
needed for the jump drive. Had I followed those rules, the (already
weakened) meson screens would have to be scrapped: in many instances,
even EM Masking would have to be dropped.

*****-----*****-----*****

The Tigress is the largest of the TL F, line-of-battle ship's in the
Imperial Navy. Unlike many of the IN's capital ships are focused on a
single mission, the 500,000 disp. Tigress is a multimission dreadnaught,
combining the functions of a fighter carrier with a big-time meson gun.
Standard Imperial Practice is to keep one squadron of Tigress' in each
sector. Further information can be found in the Classic book 'Fighting
Ship's', which gives out Classic Trav stat's for it.

NOTE: The Classic Tigress is built to support 50-ton fighters: however, I
chose to use lighter 15-ton fighters simply because I didn't catch this
fact until AFTER I had built the Tigress, and had no intention to do the
numerous fixes (and design a 50-ton fighter!) that a better translation
would require.

NOTE: No, this ship isn't included in Battle Rider.

The Sylea is the standard TL F battleship of the Third Imperium. The
designers of the Sylea emphasised sheer firepower over armour, and
equipped it with a 160,000 Mj meson gun. In order to do so, however,
they had to cut jump capasity to jump3, G6 rather than the Imperial Navy
standard of jump4, G6. To retain the 'G6' rating, armour had to be cut
from a hope-for 2000 rating to a 1000 rating. Also, to have some fuel
immediately available post-jump, the meson screen had to be cut
drastically to a PV of 1250, rather than PV 2000-2499.

Subject: Re: TL F Tigress Dreadnaught (version 2)
Message-ID: <9601092228.AA13117@Rt66.com>

Regarding the Tigress:

Why have missile barbettes? Why not just have 50 ton bays as it does in
CT? 7 barbettes uses 42 tons, and a TL14 missile bay posted holds more
missiles, and includes MFDs to control all of them. I designed a
Tigress for BR once, I don't have it online, so it must be at home. It
had at least 400 50 ton missile bays (of the 430 on the "real" Tigress.

I think when I did mine I dropped the jump drive down to J3, and that's
how I got it all to fit with 50ton fighters :-/

Other suggestions would include:

More computers, just in case :-)

Don't bother with non-msl MFDs at TL15+, the savings isn't worth the
reduction in flexibility.

I guess it needs dampers to look like CT, but they are more or less
useless in TNE, it'd do better with 8 more lasers.

In converting old designs to FFS, a big problem is crew. The quarters
don't matter, just use the TNE crew, and assume hot-bunking, and 4 to a
small SR or something. When they were built, they would have had a much
smaller crew. The space eater is the wk station requirement.

Also, remember that the MS rules in BR are broken! They make it
possible to have a perfect screen, and the same weapon/screen combo
played in BL will allow a small MG to get through the screen some of the
time (5%). This means that assuming ships are designed to meet BL play
requirements, you don't need a super-huge MG, as long as it has the max
SR possible since what you want is to take more shots at the target from
farther away. within the SR of 10, hitting any big ship isn't a
problem, even if the weapon has a SR of 2:

DMs @ range 10:

base: Imp
ROF: -2
Target size: -4
Evasion: +2 (+3 if BL)

So worst case, the to-hit is Average (and one level easier than this if
you use the broken BR tasks, since the task would be 1 when it should be
2). If you don't get the +3 evasion, it's Easy, and that's with a SR 2
MG!

The end result of this is that I might be inclined to reduce the MG on
the Tigress (the screen is good, IMO, as you have it)... either lower
the DE, or drop the Reff a bit. Of the 2, I'd keep thew SR of 10, and
drop the DE to make room for stuff. Just make sure the damage is enough
to do criticals to a VL target (so it needs to have a damage of at least
5 in BR terms).

*sigh* doing conversions is way too much trouble :-)

All in all, pretty neat (the Sylea wasn't ever done in detail that I
know of, so your design works just fine).

Regards,
Merrick
